Dangers of Working at Height

This month we are taking a look at the need to educating people on the dangers of working at height.

The UK construction industry is truly diverse, it covers the entire lifecycle from raw materials including mining, quarrying and forestry for the construction of infrastructure and buildings, through to the manufacture and supply of building products, maintenance materials, through to demolition.

All construction projects share common risks and while construction companies use a wide range of safety practices as part of their safety and management programmes there is an increased emphasis on the need to educating people on the dangers of working at height.

Working at height remains one of the biggest cause of fatalities and major injuries within the UK Construction Industry. A report published by HSE states, ‘In 2022, falls from height accounted for 30 fatal injuries and approx. 18 other serious related injury were caused by a strike from a moving, flying or falling object’. However, the most common construction accidents occurring on site involve falls often occur from scaffolding, ladders, elevated place, roofs, chimneys etc...

Most construction contractors commit people to working at height either during the building phase, demolition, or when maintenance and or repairs are required.

While everyone understands the dangers of working at height not everyone is familiar with workplace systems and preventions that are available to protect construction teams while they are working on site and at height.

All building projects are fraught with risks that can take many forms; from the development of the building structures, examples could include, open-life-shafts which create potential fall through, to technical risks, inadequate and incomplete building designs and or design exceptions, or the use of wrongly selected building materials, all of which could impact possible errors and safety risks to the construction team.

Along with all the health and safety risks that can occur on a construction site, changeable weather conditions also play a significant role in the chance of accidents. Extreme weather present hazards to cranes and tower operators with an increasing chance of being blown across to the side, accelerating the chance of workers falling especially if there is insufficient side protection.

Health and safety regulations, guidance, and new legislation can be daunting when trying to create and manage a safe and productive construction site.

Developers and Main Contractors must ensure the workforce they are responsible for, have the correct knowledge and preventative measures to protect them throughout the project build.

Essential Site Skills can take the worry out of managing your Health and Safety Training Programmes.

We can deliver in-house accredited training courses right to your premises, anywhere in the UK.

We recommend you look at the following key Working at Height courses…

Work-life balance in a demanding construction environment

The changing face of the construction industry is widely reported on from an ageing workforce going into retirement to the need to attract more diversity into the industry.

It is generally accepted that the industry needs to boost the recruitment of key professions such as project management and larger numbers of essential site-based roles through upskilling, training and professional development, including; Acoustic engineers, Bricklayers, Carpenters, Chartered surveyors, Civil engineers, Construction and Building trades supervisors, Construction project managers, Design engineers, Groundworkers, Mechanical and electrical engineers, Plant operatives, Planners and Production managers, Quantity surveyors, Structural engineers and not least General labourers.

There is no easy route to solving the skills shortage, however the construction industry needs to be proactive in their recruitment, highlighting skillsets that are transferable, and continuing to look at new pathways into the industry via new technology, incentives, increasing graduate training programmes, in company training & NVQs, apprenticeship frameworks, and continued professional development (CPD) ensuring high quality training throughout an employee’s career.

It is estimated that around 3.4% of construction workers suffered from work-related ill health with cases of stress, depression and, or anxiety which is recorded as being new or long-standing in HSE published construction statistics, 2021.

We all know that our working environments impacts our mental health.

Companies that prioritise employee’s holistic wellbeing by supporting their efforts to find the right work culture is one way to make it clear to their employees that workplace relationships are not just transactional.

Employers benefit when they help their people to prioritise what they seek most from their working environment. The pandemic has prompted a whole generation of workers to reassess their work-life trade-offs. People are not just looking for career advancement they are looking for a work environment where there is recognition of the need for a balance between the demands of work, family, and their personal life.

Creating environments where management take appropriate action to protect employees’ psychological mental health alongside protecting their physical safety, improves everyone’s resilience and goes a long way to building positive work force.

Investing in a positive employee’s experience

Essential Site Skills are course providers for, ‘Mental Health First Aid Champion (MHFA)’

By giving your teams the opportunity to work together to promote positive mental health and wellbeing within their communities and construction environments, you develop mentally healthy people who have the resilience to cope with normal stresses and adverse events while maintaining a positive and realistic sense of self.

The Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) course is an internationally recognised training course which teaches people how to spot the signs and symptoms of mental ill health and provides the knowledge to be able to help on first aid basis.

The MHFA England training will not teach your employees to be therapists, but just like physical first aid, it does teach people to listen, reassure and respond, even in a crisis.

Remember, everyone’s mental health can fluctuate as changes to everyday life takes its course. When we create workplace cultures where people can be themselves, it is easier for people to talk about wellness and mental health concerns without fear making it easier to reach out for help.

Understanding the benefits of positive mental health and wellbeing in a construction environment

Construction sites have always been potentially, physically hazardous places to work. The general strategy for dealing with these high-pressure working environments is mandatory health and safety training to ensure that everyone who works on site is aware of the risks and individuals know how to work safely. The Health and Safety at work Act 1974 (HSE) is the primary piece of legislation covering occupational health and safety in Great Britain. Full details can be found on legislation.gov.uk.

Organisations must do whatever is reasonably practicable to achieve a health and safety culture. It is not simply preventing people from workplace accidents it is also about organisations working towards creating safe, non-judgemental environments, where it becomes second nature to talk about mental health issues through the support of mental health first aid champions within the business.

Most businesses think nothing of investing in preventative maintenance programmes in-order to keep their equipment running smoothly, using training programmes to monitor employees in all elements of equipment handing and production safety. However, we need to remember business performance and productivity are interlinked with workplace cultures that are developed around mentally healthy people who are motivated.

So, isn’t it time to start viewing mental health and wellbeing support in the workplace differently?

Every construction business should be proactive in providing a mental health first aider with the appropriate training to help others. The appointment of a mental health champion into the workplace will proving support and education on mental health problems, challenge mental health stigma and provide peer support for all employees.

It is thought that 1 in 4 people will encounter a mental health difficulty at some point in our working lives so there is a real need to equip employees who wish to be wellbeing, first aid champions with the appropriate training to help them support and mentor colleagues through challenging times.

Who should be a wellbeing, mental health first aid champion?

There are six main skills needed to be an effective Wellbeing Mental Health Champion:

? Understanding
? Enhanced people skills including non-judgment listening
? Self-help resources, able to move everyone towards a better work-life-balance
? Confidentiality and safeguarding
? Knowledge to help someone recover their wellbeing by guiding them to further support
? Authenticity

Protecting construction workers from silica dust

Silica is found in construction materials – Natural stone, sandstone, bricks, clay, and concrete products. It is even found in some plastics as silica is used as a filter during the production process.

What is silica?

Silica is a natural compound and has multiple uses in the construction industry.

However, exposure to fine silica particles vary between distinct types of materials with fine dust remaining in the air from many different working activities. For example:

• Quarrying and stone processing - Rock drilling, blasting, breaking, crushing, and screening
• Stone production (particularly on sandstones as they are made-up of around 70% silica) into architectural masonry, cladding, traditional masonry blocks, and natural walling stone
• Refractory production, cutting, polishing, and finishing products
• Concrete product and manufacturing and production
• Demolition processes where encountering concrete, natural stone, brick, mortar, plaster, roofing products are prevalent
Be informed about the effects of breathing silica dust.

Workers do not have to get sick when working with materials containing silica. Silica related illnesses are 100% preventable.

The simplest steps to prevent exposer while working around construction products include:

? Using the correct responsive respiratory protective equipment
? Wear a face mask, and protective clothing
? Use blasting cabinets and proper ventilation
? Use wet production methods when cutting, or grinding products
? Limit the time you work in duty production environments
? Follow good personal hygiene rules –
• Do not eat or drink in dusty work-related areas
• Always Shower and change clothes after work to prevent taking dust particles home

So, know the hazards and take precautions to avoid exposure.

Remember, continued exposure can lead to developing health complications including, silicosis a long-team lung disease caused by inhaling fine crystalline silica dust over many years.

It is the responsibility of employers to provide a safe working environment for all employees.

If you find yourself in a workplace or working on construction sites where you are working around products that are known to contain crystalline silica there are health and safety training programmes that you can sign-up to.

Essential Site Skills offer extensive workplace health & safety training courses including our popular Face Fit Train the Tester course that provide those who are required to wear responsive respiratory protective equipment, the knowledge of how to conduct face fit testing using Qualitative method.

If you are responsible for health and safety within your organisation, then it is essential that face fit testing is conducted correctly, and documented evidence is recorded.

All ESS face fit testing and train the tester courses are delivered by our Fit2Fit accredited tutors.

What is the CITB Health and Safety Awareness Course

What is health and safety awareness?

Health and safety is a constant awareness that every worker should have at all times, being aware of how they are working and able to recognise hazards they may face or potential hazards they identify. It’s all about mitigating risks and providing a workplace culture of safe working practices and procedures. When proper safety precautions are in place everyone feels safe doing their job and are more productive. Workplaces where employees are involved in decisions and accountability are generally safer and healthier, it’s important to talk, listen and cooperate with each other to identify the best solutions to the problem. A safe workplace is an efficient one!

What is the CITB Health and Safety Awareness (HSA) Course?

The one day health and safety course is designed to provide an understanding of potential hazards construction workers may face on site. It is the most recognised qualification for those that are looking to obtain their CSCS Labourer’s card. This CITB Site Safety plus course is aimed at those either already working in the construction and civil engineering industry or considering it.

By the end of the course, you will have covered topics such as:

Workers' individual responsibilities for their own safety and the safety of others

Typical construction hazards and how these are controlled

How everyone can help achieve better practical standards of safety on site

Legal requirements and liabilities

Working at height

Manual handling

Fire prevention

Work equipment

Occupational health

At the start of the course you will be provided with the mandatory course publication ‘Construction health and safety awareness (GE707)’, to support you during your course and retained upon completion of the course for further reference.

The examination is a multiple-choice test taken at the end of the course, which must be completed within 30 minutes. The question paper consists of 25 questions; 20 questions are worth 1 mark each and 5 questions are worth 2 marks each. The learner must obtain 25 marks out of 30 (83%) in order to pass the exam. It is possible to re-sit the exam should the learner fail.

Certification is valid for 5 years; to remain certificated and to renew your CSCS Labourers card you will need to retake the course before the expiry date.

Can I do the health and safety awareness course online?

Yes! The CITB developed an online version of the CITB Health and Safety Awareness (HSA) course that can be completed entirely online. This online course is ideal for those who wish to apply for the CSCS green labourer card. At ESS we run regular online health and safety awareness courses, you can either search for dates via the course page or view our training calendar for a full list of upcoming public courses by month and year. You can book online or contact us and we will do the booking for you.

How long does the one day health and safety course last?

This is a one day course and delegates are required to complete the full day (7.5 hours) to be eligible
for certification.

What CSCS card do I need for a labourer?

For those working as a labourer, you will need the CSCS Green Labourer’s card. As we’ve discussed the CITB Health and Safety Awareness course is the most popular route to gaining this card quickly.

How do I get a labouring CSCS card?

It is easy to apply for your CSCS green labourer card online, make sure you have followed steps 1 and 2 before applying and paying for your card:

ESS Guide to Qualitative Face Fit Testing

ESS Guide to Qualitative Face Fit Testing

Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE) is key to reducing the risks of workers developing life-changing illnesses from exposure to airborne hazards. Where RPE is necessary, it’s a legal responsibility for employers to ensure that any masks being used have undergone some form of face fit testing to certify it's effectiveness for the wearer.

What is face fit testing?
Face fit testing is the only way of thoroughly checking that any RPE being used is functioning correctly, and offering the necessary level of protection the wearer needs.

The process of fit testing ensures the tight-fitting mask forms a secure seal around the wearer’s face. This seal is essential to protecting the health of workers who could potentially come into contact with airborne hazards in their line of work.

Failure to form a complete seal may allow harmful particles to bypass the mask and make their way into the wearer’s respiratory system. This can have life-changing, and potentially deadly, consequences for the worker.

ESS offer Face Fit Testing and Train the Tester Nationwide –

How can the construction industry do better?

The UK Construction industry is looking to recruit quarter of a million new workers by 2026 to keep pace with demand according to Construction Industry Training Board (CITB).

Construction and labour productivity has not kept pace with other industries, and across the UK there is a need to refresh the way the construction industry hires and retains employees.

Changing construction companies’ strategic priorities.

Construction companies everywhere complain that they can’t find or retain enough people with the right skills – few companies develop talent internally. Often companies run their business units and projects as if they were independent companies, treating each project as if it were one of a kind, relying on a consistent flow of independently skilled trades to complete the work with bricklayers, electrical trades, carpentry, plumbing and HVAC trades most in demand.

The construction industry must keep up with national economy and competitiveness by untapping its many strengths with a well-trained industry. These training routes into the construction industry should be the industries focus if we are to refresh working practices, develop a highly skilled and talented workforce, and fulfil vacancies.

Site construction problems are systemic and all too common, usually missed communication at all levels for example, insufficient risk management, the kind that crop up on-the-job when safety is regulated to a checkbox exercise!

Essential Site Skills believe a well-trained construction industry is essential for better project management, alongside successful communication between the developers, project managers, contractors, and subcontractors – where, everyone knows when a problem arises on site, that everyone has the knowledge and understanding on how to proceed correctly.

We need to create training that’s connected to experiences.

Essential Site Skills (ESS) training provider offer a comprehensive range of Construction related courses and NVQ qualifications, including CITB, UKATA, Fit2Fit, IOSH, NEBOSH, CPCS and NPORS accredited courses, to name a few.

Why is Safety at Work so Important?

As safety permeates everything we do, everyone should agree that safety in the workplace is critically important.

Essential Site Skills are one of the first training providers to offer the CITB temporary works course in the UK. Today, we continue to offer the absolute best training and qualifications across a wide range of accredited construction and NVQs courses, designed to give everyone from operatives to senior managers, the skills they need to progress through their industries safely.

Many contractors that are project based are starting to move away from typically hiring staff only as required, training them on-the-job, by working side-by-side with more seasoned employees; too day-to-day people development programmes and apprenticeships that address their skills gaps.

Training can play a vital part in reducing the risk of construction site accidents.

With job roles requiring continued development of both hard and soft skills, including, problem solving, supervising, and managing risk, aligning companies’ strategic priorities is the first step toward building a sustainable safety culture.

Organisations have a continuing need for employees to be ready and able to make rapid decisions onsite. Suppose that your operations manager feels frustrated by the companies HSE function’s lack of appreciation for the difficulties they face onsite.

? Create a Safety environment that includes both learning and teaching
? Make sure employees have the right tools and have regular equipment inspections
? Reward employees for safe behaviour
? Identify the skills gaps

Training and retaining qualified employees are ongoing issues for most businesses. Essential Site Skills - Apprenticeships and Building a Skilled Workforce

Essential Site Skills are delighted to announce that we have successfully retained a place on the UK Government’s Register of Apprenticeship Training Providers (RoATP).

Apprenticeships thrive in businesses with strong learning cultures they provide a fantastic platform for developing employees, enabling organisations and businesses to grow a skilled workforce who can take on responsibility and act with greater independence.

Providing an equal opportunity for employees to participant in apprenticeship programmes will develop key management skills that they can apply directly into real work-related environments, projects, and tasks while they learn, increasing a manager’s ability to delegate work with confidence.

We believe the future of businesses requires the responsibility to learn and the responsibility to teach! Apprenticeships, provide the principal building blocks for a culture of learning, they develop careers, keeping employees loyal and more engaged in their work.

Giving individuals the opportunity to combining a qualification with their job through a 12–18-month ‘work-study‘ programme, enables employees to grow professionally, earning while they learn.

Consequently, organisations and businesses benefit from the valuable skills and knowledge that can be applied from the beginning of all ‘work-study ‘programmes. If you are an employer looking to up-skill your team, the business case for apprenticeships is a compelling one.

Essential Site Skills already work with organisations and businesses nationally.
For organisations and businesses looking to find apprenticeship courses for their workforce, Essential Site Skills are recognised as an approved provider by the ESFA.
