Szerelmey Cleans And Restores Building To Replicate Existing Stonework

Construction News Image
Szerelmey Restoration Limited, the specialist in restoration and conservation of buildings has cleaned and restored 16-18 New Bridge Street, London, EC2 to replicate existing stonework and has raised the facade to accommodate two new floors in a contract worth £350,000.

The existing stonework to the Tudor Street and New Bridge Street elevations was initially cleaned using a water cleaning process. Once cleaned Szerelmey carried out numerous surveys to ascertain the true profile of the existing stonework to ensure the new stone would accurately replicate the existing.

The existing façade needed to be raised by approximately five metres to accommodate the inclusion of two new floors from the fourth to the sixth floor level. All the new stonework had to be load bearing, which meant transferring the load back to the original structure at third floor level. Stones were individually manufactured and hand set, including arches, keystones, finials, a cornice and a new pediment.

Greg Verhoef Managing Director of Szerelmey commented: "This was a challenging task that required careful planning and attention to detail; we are exceptionally pleased with the completed job."

Contractor Wallis was appointed to convert the building into office space in this much sought after location. ESA was the architect on the project.
