Educational Plans To Boost Contractors

There's a raft of major building contracts on the way in both Wales and England.

Swansea Council is to look at building six primary schools to replace 13 where it considers buildings and facilities are out-dated and in a poor condition.

Meanwhile, a new university campus will be built in Essex this summer following approval by councillors.

Swansea Council has already outlined its programme, Quality in Education 2020, a study that will focus on new-build primaries, to replace: Gorseinon Infants/Juniors/Nursery; Graig Infants/Pentrepoeth Infants/Juniors; Manselton Primary/Cwmbwrla Primary; Tregwyr Infants/Juniors and Brynhyfryd Infants/Juniors and Plasmarl Primary.

The move came after the council secured £240,000 from the Welsh Assembly Government towards carrying out the initial feasibility studies.

In England, Anglia Ruskin University, based in Cambridge and Chelmsford, had already secured £9.3m for a new centre in Harlow.

A total of 100 students will be signed up in September 2010, in advance of the completion of the site.

The campus will include a 96-seat lecture theatre and was approved by Harlow District Council.

It will initially offer six degree-level courses in IT, business management, early childhood studies, journalism, sports journalism and public services.

The work has been funded by the East of England Development Agency (EEDA), the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) and Growth Area Partnership.

Tenders are expected to be invited shortly.
