The derelict Chinnor cement works, in South Oxfordshire, is set to be transformed thanks to a £2.8 million grant from the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA).
The national housing and regeneration agency has agreed to support the forecast development of 71 new and affordable homes at the site in Hill Road, Chinnor. The new homes will be built by Taylor Wimpey and managed by Catalyst Housing Group.
The Chinnor cement works began operating in 1908, but closed its doors for the last time in 2000.
David Ashworth, Head of Area at the HCA, said: "This announcement demonstrates the HCA's commitment to providing new and affordable homes for communities that need them across the south east.
"This grant will enable the community of South Oxfordshire to benefit from these new and affordable homes, replacing the now derelict cement works which closed in 2000. We will continue to support our partners and the community in creating these affordable and sustainable places."
John Foxall, Managing Director of Catalyst Communities Housing Association, said: "Being involved in projects like this, where we are part of the transformation of a wasted space into much needed housing, is central to everything we do as a housing association. Thanks to the vital funding from the HCA we can now look forward to a disused former cement works developing into a thriving community."
Eighteen homes will be available under the shared ownership scheme New Build Homebuy. A further 53 units are forecast to be available for social rent. All the properties will achieve Level 3 under the Code for Sustainable Homes.
