Manchester City Council is to demolish 189 maisonettes in Collyhurst as part of plans to regenerate the area.
The homes, on Eastford Square, Hamerton Road, Whitley Road, Talgarth Road and Collyhurst Street are to be demolished over the next three years.
The move follows a survey of the maisonettes' residents, in which 76 per cent of those interviewed said they would stay in the area if their homes were replaced, and 94 per cent said they were in favour of redesigning the area.
The City Council will carry out the work in phases to reduce the impact on residents, with the block of maisonettes above shops on Eastford Square to be demolished last.
Councillor Paul Andrews, Manchester City Council's Executive Member for Neighbourhood Services, said: "Last year, residents living in the maisonettes told us they wanted the area to be regenerated, and the vast majority wanted to stay in Collyhurst.
"This move means we're now able to get that process started, and anyone who has to move out of the maisonettes to another area will be given a guarantee they can return.
"We are also committed to making sure this will have as little impact on residents as possible, with blocks being demolished in phases. The block above the shops on Eastford Square will be the last to go, as these shops are widely used by residents from across the area.
"This is part of our aim of making sure all Collyhurst residents have the first class homes they deserve. We know other homes in Collyhurst need improvements and we are now working to identify the best way of providing some new windows, fencing and boilers.
"We are still working with the government to secure the funding needed to redesign and regenerate all our other Collyhurst properties, and we hope to hear more about this later in the year."
