Folding Walls Let Cardiff City Stadium Maximise Hospitality Business

Construction News Image
Folding walls from Building Additions have been installed at the brand new Cardiff City Stadium to provide the flexible space needed to maximise hospitality business.

The West Stand of the impressive 25,000 seater stadium, which is home to Cardiff City FC and Cardiff Blues Rugby Club, holds all the hospitality and concourse areas. Office Visions was the main contractor for the fit-out of the West Stand which involved flooring, ceilings, wall finishes, bars and folding partitions.

Lee Evans, Contract Manager for Office Visions said: "The stadium wanted to be able to divide the large banqueting suite on level three into two rooms to accommodate smaller events without losing the flexibility to have a large banqueting space when required. Building Additions’ Operable Walls let us do this as their sound insulation properties allow simultaneous events to be held side by side without disturbance to each other. The extensive range of finishes for the walls meant a cream laminate could be used to match the interior scheme too."

The Operable Wall system is made up of individual panels that interlock for an acoustic seal. They offer sound insulation excellence of up to 59 dB and are available in a wide variety of configurations. For this project, a special ‘slot’ was made in the bespoke sloping ceiling to accommodate the Operable Wall, enabling it to fold right back to the window when not in use.

Another part of the brief was to provide a means of opening up the two neighbouring private corporate hospitality boxes of main contractors Laing O’Rourke and lead developers PMG Developments to allow for a double sized box when required. Here, a Multifold partition from Building Additions was chosen in a light oak finish. The Multifold is ideal for medium acoustics and when there is a need for the weight to be on the floor when the support structure is not load bearing. The system consists of continuously hinged panels that are locked into place every second panel and can either be single or bi-parting.

Delighted with the solution, Lee added: "Having used Building Additions on many projects before, we were confident the products would meet all requirements and deliver on quality. We were also very pleased with the service the company provided to ensure the project was a success, at one point supplying 10 men to carry the operable wall panels up numerous flights of stairs when lifts could not be used."
