Mayor Opens New Footbridge

The sun shone on Barry for the official opening of the Thompson Street Footbridge yesterday, May 10, when local school children helped the Mayor of the Vale of Glamorgan, Cllr Emlyn Williams, with the ribbon cutting ceremony.

The Mayor welcomed councillors and representatives of the organisations involved with the project, before snipping the ribbon held by Eve Limbrick and Kieran Woolaston, from Gladstone Primary School and Charlotte Rose and Aaron Bollingham, from Holton Road Primary School.

The bridge was commissioned by the Vale of Glamorgan Council and Council Leader, Gordon Kemp. He said: "The bridge is an important link between Barry’s new Waterfront development and the town centre. The council was determined that this link be built and I’m pleased to say the bridge, which I’m told is a 60 tonne structure, was built within budget.

"The bridge is just one of several regeneration projects that we are progressing, as we work to regenerate Barry."

Landscaping around the bridge has recently been completed and the public artwork 'Barry Dominoes', produced by artist Lulu Quinn in conjunction with local people, has been installed.

The bridge was funded by the council with support from the Welsh Assembly Government and Associated British Ports. The bridge was designed by Parsons Brinkerhoff and constructed by Carillion.
