Icynene distributors of Airseal Insulation has successfully completed the project to insulate the new 12 en-suite bed and communal area (total area 400m2) which makes up the new wing of The Manse nursing home in Lancashire.
The Owner of The Manse Les Ansell commented: "The building is holding the heat at a constant 23oC regardless of weather conditions. If the wind is blowing it has no effect on the performance and doesn’t put any extra load on the heating. The radiators were reduced in size by 40 per cent from their original design and even though they might not be on, the building is warm, draft free and comfortable for staff and the occupants."
Icynene, the insulation material used on The Manse project, is now the largest supplier of soft foam insulation and air barrier material in North America. It has been used in over 200,000 healthy, environmentally-friendly and energy efficient building projects across the world.
Soft foam is the fastest growing insulation material in the world today and Icynene’s spray-in-place products contain no harmful emissions. Applied as a liquid, Icynene expands to 100 times its volume in seconds to fill every crack and crevice while remaining flexible so that the integrity of the building envelope seal remains intact over time.
"Installing Icynene insulation has resulted into substantially lower fuel bills," said Les Ansell. "The boiler size was designed for a conventional construction at 165,000btu. Yet using Icynene to seal up the external timber frame envelope we now operate with a 100,000 btu boiler, similar to that in a three bed semi-detached house. The new build is 23% by volume of the new and old buildings combined, yet it accounts for only 7.3% of the total gas used."
"Icynene is not only a proven pathway to energy efficiency and reducing CO2 emissions but also extremely popular with design professionals as it enables them to explore geometry and space without compromising building envelope performance," said Airseal's Mick Morris. "As an air barrier, it will meet or exceed the air tightness performance standards set out by the Code for Sustainable Homes."
