An award winning Wrexham construction company has won a major £6.1million contract to build a new school and playing fields in Connah's Quay.
Read Construction Holdings Ltd won the contract from Flintshire County Council to facilitate the amalgamation of Custom House Junior School and Dee Road Infants School.
The project involves building one new school on the existing playing fields, then demolishing the two old school buildings to create new playing fields.
Andy Richards, Business Manager of Read Construction, described the contract as significant for the company and its future sustainability.
"Tendering for these contracts can be quite complex and over the last six months we have noticed that information on Corporate Social Responsibility and Delivering Community Benefits are an increasingly important requirement in tenders."
He said that advice and assistance obtained during an Assembly Government workshop on procurement had been very beneficial and had strengthened Read’s competencies in this area.
Deputy First Minister Ieuan Wyn Jones said the importance of enabling smaller local businesses to bid for public sector procurement opportunities was highlighted in Economic Renewal: a New Direction.
"The public sector will control £16 billion of expenditure in Wales this year, with funding on capital developments accounting for approximately £1.7billion. It is therefore very important that Welsh businesses are given an even chance to win contracts competitively and that they have the opportunity to deliver what we need."
Read Construction specialises in construction projects for the education and health sectors and its largest previous project was a £3.25m contract for Chester Catholic High School.
