Landlords Fined Over Dilapidated Former Pub

The owners of a derelict former pub have been ordered to pay more than £4,000 for allowing the building to fall into a dilapidated condition.

Nadia Homes, owners of the former Bricklayer'' Arms in Moston, pleaded guilty to not complying with a legal notice during a hearing at Manchester Magistrates' Court .

They were fined £1,800 with £2,251 costs and a £15 victims of crime surcharge, which must all be paid within 28 days of the hearing.

Manchester City Council officers were called out to carry out emergency work, including boarding up windows and doors, to make the former Moston Lane pub secure following a fire in August 2009.

The building was in such a dilapidated state the officers then served a notice on Nadia Homes, ordering them to either refurbish or demolish the building.

The notice expired with no work being carried out and although the City Council contacted Nadia Homes on several occasions in an attempt to resolve the matter, nothing was done.

The City Council will now consider further action, including either repairing or demolishing the building, if Nadia Homes still refuses to act.

Councillor David Royle, Manchester City Council's Assistant Executive Member for the Environment, said: "Landlords have a responsibility to make sure they do not allow their properties to get into such a disgraceful condition, and they should be warned that we will not tolerate anyone who does this.

"We are now expecting Nadia Homes to do something about the state of this building. They should be clear that if they fail to do this we will have no choice but to step in and make sure we recoup our costs."
