£6m Sutton Hill Regeneration Under Way

Work is due to begin on the £2m construction phase of a major regeneration scheme in Sutton Hill local centre.

The work, part of a larger £6m project on the estate, is expected to be completed by May.

Local contractor McPhillips (Wellington) Ltd was due to fence off areas of the site in Stonedale, Southfield and Southgate as well as areas between the Sir Alexander Fleming School and the Community Centre.

Following the forthcoming Bank Holiday weekend, work will begin to demolish 19 properties and 30 garages in the three streets. The first phase of the regeneration projects will see improvements to the local infrastructure, public realm and the provision of two new retail units and four residential flats.

While work is continuing, pedestrian routes will be maintained and clearly signed at all times. Representatives from both Telford & Wrekin Council and McPhillips will be based on site during the work to ensure a proactive and sensitive approach to issues raised by local residents.

Councillor Eric Carter, Cabinet Member for Housing, Regeneration and Prosperity, said: "This is the first phase of the Sutton Hill Local Centre scheme which will deliver a substantial social and economic regeneration for the estate.

"After months of planning, consulting and acquiring properties, it is genuinely exciting to be in a position where work is starting on the wider regeneration of the estate.

"This first phase signals the start of a major transformation and upgrade of Sutton Hill and we will be working very closely with residents in the coming months to ensure we deliver what they want."
