New Plans For Ponty Go On Show

Shoppers and traders flocked to view the exciting new plans for the £10.5m Pontypridd Town Centre regeneration project in Wales.

Since Wednesday proposals of how the multi million pound investment will totally transform the centre of the town have been on display to the general public with 300 attending o nthe first day

Rhondda Cynon Taf Council's Cabinet Member for Economic Development and Safer Communities Cllr Paul Cannon said: "I am very pleased about the amount of positive feedback we have already received from shoppers and traders in Pontypridd who are excited at the fact that major regeneration plans for Pontypridd town centre are proceeding.

"It has indeed been a long-time coming but our £10.5million project will help strengthen Pontypridd’s shopping hub and make it a destination for the 21st century. Preparatory work has already commenced on Mill Street and the first main phase will begin at the start of 2011. We will visually transform Pontypridd town centre for the benefit of visitors, shopkeepers and residents alike."

The planned regeneration scheme is due to the cash injection which comes from the Welsh Assembly Government through the European Regional Development Fund and Targeted Match Funding, plus the Council’s own financial resources and private sector contributions.

Through a succession of phased works, regeneration improvements will stretch the length of Taff Street, Market Street, Mill Street, Penuel Lane and Church Street. The proposed works include new paving, road surfacing, street furniture, signage, lighting and distinctive features.

The streetscape of Pontypridd Town Centre will be transformed, through introducing high quality paved areas, and creating key public spaces, making Pontypridd more desirable for pedestrians who are shopping, working, or visiting the town.

A further major part of the project is the Pontypridd Townscape Enhancement Programme, which will provide the opportunity for commercial property owners in the town to take advantage of financial support of potentially up to 70%, which can contribute towards physically enhancing properties.
