Work has started the first phase of a major development which holds the key to creating thousands of jobs and new homes in North East Bridgwater.
Hallam Land Management is preparing the site at Sydenham Farm, in readiness for developer David Wilson Homes South West to begin building more than 400 new and affordable homes in the coming months.
The news was welcomed by partners as the first step in delivering a brighter future for Bridgwater, which is the site of long-term plans to deliver 2,000 high quality new homes, community facilities and more than 3,000 jobs for the area.
The development is the result of close partnership working over the last year between Hallam Land Management, Sedgemoor District Council, the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA), David Wilson Homes, supermarket chain Morrisons, who propose to open a regional distribution centre employing up to 2,500 people, and Yarlington Housing Group, who will manage the affordable housing.
Hallam Land Management Director Nick Duckworth said: "The site is home to the Willow Man who represents the spirit and heritage of Bridgwater. It is fantastic that, after all the hard work put in by partners recently, people can now see work taking place on the ground. We have a strong vision for this site, and all the partners have played their part in bringing this to life.
"Before long, the Willow Man will be standing proudly at the centre of Bridgwater's future, next to high quality homes, jobs and facilities for local people.
"That has to be good news for Bridgwater, and is a testament to the support shown to the project by all the partners involved."
