A £77 million contract to construct the multi-storey car park and covered court for Heathrow Airport's new Terminal 2 has been awarded to Laing O’Rourke with work planned to start in May 2011.
The 1,340-space car park - with associated roads and ramps - and covered court are integral to the design of the new terminal which will open to passengers in 2014.
The court is formed by an extension of the main terminal building's signature 'wave' roof and provides a link to the car park which is the main point of entry and exit for all passengers. Departing and arriving passengers will cross bridges that span the court, and it is also where lifts and escalators from the existing rail stations will be located. As well as being landscaped, the covered court is to feature specially commissioned art work.
Steven Morgan, BAA Capital Director said: "Laing O'Rourke has been awarded this contract following a competitive bid which demonstrated that they fully understood BAA's intelligent client approach and could deliver the car park and associated infrastructure safely, innovatively and to the highest standards of quality. To date, they have successfully worked as one half of the HETCo joint venture responsible for delivering the main terminal building. We look forward to continuing this relationship on the multi-storey car park."
This contract forms part of the overall £2.2bn Terminal 2 development which includes the main building; associated satellite pier, and a new cooling station and energy centre. Heathrow’s new Terminal 2 will provide passengers travelling on Star Alliance airlines with a simpler, smoother journey through high quality facilities.
