Eaga Welcomes Cash For Green Electricty Scheme

Clean energy provider Eaga has welcomed the commitment by the Government to protect the cash for green electricity scheme.

A fast-track review was launched in February to understand how feed-in-tariffs (FITs) were working.

While the Government has announced a reduced tariff for large scale solar over 50kW, it has re-iterated its strong support for small scale programmes.

Greg Barker, Climate Change Minister, said the cash for green electricity scheme is a great way to reward homes, communities and small businesses that produce their own renewable power.

The news comes a day after Eaga announced a £300 million private equity funding agreement to fit solar PV panels to up to 35,000 social housing properties.

Utilising the FIT, this ground-breaking initiative works in partnership with social housing providers to provide the systems free to their residents. As well as rolling out the environmental benefits of solar it is also helping households cut their energy bills, typically by a third and often more.

John Swinney, Strategy Director at Eaga, added: "Protecting green electricity this way is great news and we welcome the Government’s support. With our £300 million funding model now in place we can ramp up the number of installations to a new level and make low carbon living affordable and accessible for tens of thousands of social housing residents. However, we would urge social housing providers interested in this scheme to act quickly before the funding is used."
