Boyes Rees Staff Step Up To Sustainability Challenge

Cardiff based Boyes Rees Architects has set its staff a sustainability challenge to mark Wales Sustainability Week.

Wales Sustainability Week (14-21 May) is a Welsh Assembly Government initiative encouraging people to take specific action to help Wales become a more sustainable nation.

Based on Greyfriars Road, Boyes Rees is one of Wales' largest architectural practices, offering innovative and sustainable design and planning services to the private and public sector.

Staff are being encouraged to act more sustainably during the week. The best performing employee will then be awarded the accolade of 'Boyes Rees sustainable employee of the week'.

Suggested activity includes recycling old mobile phones, using more sustainable methods of transport to and from work, to use the stairs instead of the lift to the fourth floor office as well as coming up with their own ways of being a sustainable employee.

Jane Boyes, Managing Director at Boyes Rees Architects said: "At Boyes Rees, we aim to put sustainability at the heart of everything we do. We are extremely committed to the green building agenda and reducing Wales' carbon footprint.

"We have our in-house Futures team of dedicated experts to drive forward the low carbon agenda, track best practice and support our project teams in the rapidly evolving regulatory framework.

"We are pleased to be supporting the Assembly Government in their campaign to promote sustainable living. It underlines our ongoing commitment to reducing our own carbon footprint as well as of our clients and raising awareness amongst staff on how they can contribute."

Boyes Rees is a member of the Welsh Assembly Government's Sustainable Development Charter as part of their commitment to making sustainable development central in all that they do.

The Charter is the Welsh Assembly Government's main network providing organisations opportunities to share their experiences on sustainable development. Each organisation also sets itself an annual challenge of what they will do differently and report against it each year.

The Sustainable Development Charter now has 65 members with Carillion and Butler & Young as some the most recent organisations to sign up.

Boyes Rees has strong green credentials. It is currently designing a new campus in Nant Garw for Coleg Morgannwg which has been selected as a Constructing Excellence Wales demonstration project based on its exemplary sustainability at design stage.

The scheme has also been chosen as a case study for the three year EU/WAG funded Low Carbon Research Institute programme that Boyes Rees is working on with the Welsh School of Architecture.
