Pupils Bury Time Capsule At New Academy

Students from Ormiston Bushfield Academy have teamed up with construction company Kier to create a piece of history at their new school by burying a time capsule filled with artefacts which represent school life of today.

Students will be burying the time capsule in what will be the reception area of the new school with councillor John Holdich, Cabinet Member for Education, Skills and University, on Wednesday 21 September 2011.

Children from each year group have chosen items to go inside the time capsule which include photographs, a school tie, a map of the school, 3D images of the old and new schools and signatures of the workmen building the new school. A plaque will also be put in place to mark the spot where it is buried.

Councillor Holdich said: "Burying the time capsule in the reception of the new school is a fantastic idea. It will be something that the students can go on to tell their own children and grandchildren about in the future.

"It is now less than a year until the new academy opens and the buildings are really starting to take shape. The main frame is in place, all floor slabs have been laid and roofing works are nearing completion. Once the school is completed we will have delivered on our promise to provide children in this part of Peterborough with a fantastic new school with first class facilities."

The new £20.6 million academy will accommodate 950 students, an increase from around 730 currently and will include a 524 sq m library and centres catering for young people and early years. There will be a small extension to Bushfield Sports Centre and refurbishment of the changing room pavilion.

The academy design features a curved, double height, fully glazed entrance opening on to a public plaza with a colonnade link to the sports centre. Once the new premises are completed the existing 8,500 sq m buildings will be demolished.
