Willmott Dixon has been appointed preferred bidder by Housing 21 for a £38 million contract to deliver five new elderly extra care facilities across Warwickshire.
The contract is part of Housing 21's PPP arrangement with Warwickshire County Council that will see one of the UK's leaders in providing care, health and housing for older people responsible for constructing, maintaining and managing the five schemes over a 30 year period.
As preferred bidder, Willmott Dixon is in pole position for a two year construction programme starting in 2012 to build care homes in Rugby, Bedworth, Atherstone, Alcester and Stratford-upon-Avon. When completed in 2014, it will give Warwickshire 355 new extra care units, along with 21 self contained bungalows.
These extra care units will give residents the security and privacy of their own home, under the protective support of Housing 21. They will benefit from responsive specialist care and support services, plus on-site facilities including communal facilities, day care centre with lounges, hair salon, wellbeing suite, hobbies room and restaurant.
The five homes will be delivered by Willmott Dixon's Midlands office and the company is teaming up with a consultancy team that includes Birmingham-based architect Glancy Nicholls, along with Cox Turner Morse, structural engineer and Davis Landgon, QS.
The first project starts in Bedworth in July next year, followed by projects in Rugby, Atherstone and Stratford-upon-Avon, with the project in Alcester starting in 2013. All work will be complete in 2014.
This is the second time that Willmott Dixon and Housing 21 have teamed up to transform elderly care accommodation in a region. In 2008, the two organisations were responsible for improving Walsall Borough Council's care facilities in a similar PPP arrangement. On that occasion, Willmott Dixon as constructor delivered extra care sheltered housing on six sites to provide 325 new apartments.
