Construction Begins On Isle Of Wight Medical Centre

Construction has started on a new medical centre for East Cowes, Isle of Wight.

The centre will replace the existing Primary Care Trust health centre in York Avenue.

This modern, purpose-built centre located on the recently completed Town Square was developed by MedicX, a specialist investor and developer of healthcare properties, and is the latest phase in the regeneration of the former GKN Works site.

The scheme is being delivered by a number of local partners, including NHS Isle of Wight, the South East England Development Agency (SEEDA) and the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) to offer a central location for local doctors and staff to provide an improved service for patients and the local community.

The GKN Works site transferred from SEEDA to the HCA on 19 September. The HCA will use its experience of managing regeneration projects to continue to support local partners.

When complete, Dr Andrews & Partners GP Practice will relocate from its base in York Avenue to the new centre, which will also house dental services, podiatry, a local district nurse team, various PCT-led clinics and a new pharmacy.

Paul Flatt, HCA senior development manager, added: "This marks another important step in our work to develop East Cowes as a great place to live, work and visit. The HCA is committed to the regeneration of East Cowes and has invested substantially with partners in the delivery of infrastructure, new homes and regeneration over the past 10 years. The project demonstrates the close relationship we have with our partners and I am pleased that work has started on this important and exciting project for the town."
