If you are looking for extra space within your home then going underground could be an option for you. Basement finishing is a great way of gaining this extra space that you need without having to move house.
Sometimes known as basement remodelling, basement finishing is a great method where you can transform an existing dark and dingy basement into a room which can be utilised by the homeowner. When considering having a basement conversion properly finished and decorated it is important that you take measures to ensure that the basement is correctly waterproofed.
Basement waterproofing is no laughing matter; when it goes wrong it goes really wrong and it can leave devastating effects behind. Once the basement waterproofing has been taken care of then you can think about basement finishing.
You should outline a floor plan in order to ensure that you have carefully planned out where the following will be:
Access to the basement from upstairs and outside.
Where plumbing is to be placed if required.
Where electrical wiring is to be placed and items such as light switches and sockets.
Where the vertical support columns are to be located.
Location of the basement windows if there are any.
Location of the basement doors.
As basement conversions are in constant contact with the earth then they become more vulnerable to dampness. This in turn makes basement finishing more complex; Basement Living can help you every step of the way and we will think about everything so that you don’t have too!
In our experience the best basement conversions are those which have stayed away from a dark interior such as dark wood panelling as this closes the space in and makes it look smaller; instead they have painted the drywall in light tones in order to make the room brighter.
One of our recent basement conversions actually used a full entertainment unit which was built into wall and had little interior lights which cast the light around the room. These added real depth to this particular space as well as providing much needed storage facilities.
If you have a basement conversion that you are not doing anything with then you are literally holding a diamond in the rough! You need to think about basement finishing and transform this space into something amazing.
