EDF Energy Names Green 'Heroes'

Construction News Image
EDF Energy, one of Britain's largest producers of low carbon electricity, has announced the names of 11 green 'Heroes' who have been selected from its Team Green Britain community as champions of sustainability.

The 'Team Green Britain Heroes', from various locations around the country, have been selected because of the actions they have taken not just to reduce their own carbon footprint, but those of others too. Those chosen are involved in activities ranging from promoting cycling as a low carbon mode of transport to growing their own produce or powering their homes with low carbon micro-generation technology.

The Heroes have been selected to become champions for sustainability, demonstrating to others the things that they can do to reduce their impact on the environment in their own everyday lives. EDF Energy will give each of the eleven winners the opportunity to trial a range of sustainable energy technologies, such as air source heat pumps or electric vehicles. The 11 chosen Heroes will share their experiences online, via the Team Green Britain website, as well as through newsletters, blogs, social media and local and national events.

All winners will also gain access to a London 2012 event and one lucky Hero from the 11, to be chosen by members of the Team Green Britain community, will also win a £10,000 grant to support a community sustainability initiative of their choosing. To claim the £10,000 prize the heroes will soon begin an electoral style campaign, locally, regionally and nationally, all hoping to be named Team Green Britain's 'Superhero', encouraging people to think about how they can make the UK greener in the run up to London 2012 and beyond.

Darren Towers, Head of Sustainability at EDF Energy, who was also part of the judging panel said: "EDF Energy founded Team Green Britain to help people to work together to tackle climate change. The Heroes Programme is a real celebration of this – it’s about real people working together and inspiring others to achieve real results in the race against climate change."
