First Minister Visits Construction Site For Food Centre

Construction News Image
Wales' First Minister, Carwyn Jones, paid a visit to Furnace Farm on the Bodnant Estate in the Conwy Valley went to see the progress being made in the development of a £6.4 million Welsh food and drink centre of excellence.

Eighteenth Century farm buildings, adjacent to both the A470 and the world-famous Bodnant Garden, are being renovated to provide a splendid showcase for local produce from across Wales. Work is nearing completion, with plans to open its doors to the public this Spring.

During a tour of the site, the First Minister saw progress in the development of an extensive farm shop – to include butchery and bakery – a tea room, restaurant, cookery school and a dairy production unit for cheese, ice-cream and yoghurt. When complete, over 40 jobs will be created.

The new development – Bodnant Welsh Food – has been made possible with over £2.7m from the Welsh Government through the European Regional Development Fund, the Targeted Match Fund, as well as a Processing and Marketing Grant under the Rural Development Plan.

First Minister said: "Innovation is at the heart of building a modern tourism industry. Supporting business to drive forward initiatives which showcase the best of Wales to the local community, visitors and on a global stage is vital for success.

"I am pleased we have been able to back this development which will not only boost the agri-food sector, but also create job opportunities and encourage visitors to this outstanding part of our country."

Furnace Farm will also provide a visitor centre for the new National Beekeeping Centre for Wales, which will provide an attractive venue for beekeepers, the general public, schools and conservationists.
