The Environment Agency is working to reduce the risk of flooding to more than 1,600 properties in South Derbyshire, with construction of the flood defence starting on Tuesday 4 September 2012.
The flood risk management scheme for the lower reaches of the River Dove is being developed by the Environment Agency, with a significant financial contribution from local landowners, industry and community partners. Major partnership funding has been received from Nestlé UK, with a £1.65 million contribution to the scheme.
Over the past few years, the Environment Agency has been working with local partners and residents, to develop, consult on and approve designs for the scheme. The £5.1 million contract to construct 5km of new and improved flood defences has been awarded to Birse Civils, a Balfour Beatty Company.
Paul Grimwood, Nestlé UK CEO and Chairman, said: "Nestlé is delighted to offer its support to the River Dove Flood Risk Management Scheme by making a £1.65m contribution to the project.
"As a major UK manufacturer we always seek to invest in the communities in which we operate. Having been in Tutbury since 1901 we know how important it is, not only to our factory, but the wider South Derbyshire community to ensure properties are protected from the threat of flooding in the future.
"As well as financial support we have also committed specialist consultancy advice and space on Nestlé owned land for contractors to use as this exciting project develops."
