Costain Promotes Energy Awareness

A week-long focus on energy awareness across Costain starts on November 12 as the group pursues its target of cutting its CO2 emissions by 55% by the end of the decade.

An extensive programme of toolbox talks, staff briefings and appointment of energy champions to co-ordinate the campaign on projects and within the offices throughout the business will be backed up by promotional material and themed communication. All of this has the aim of encouraging staff to cut emissions, reduce environmental impact and save costs.

The various tools for the week have been developed and collated by Graduate Environmental Advisor, Claire Baker. "She's done a fine job," said Group Environmental Manager, Amy Shuffleton. "It's a very comprehensive package of material to support our environmental aims."

The programme comes after a series of trials in the spring at Maidenhead, Manchester and a couple of other major projects; amendments and refinements were then made before its Group-wide launch.

The theme is 'Save it by switching off': "The idea is not only to reduce the impact on the environment and its associated costs from Costain's point of view but to give people an opportunity to take the ideas home with them,” she added. Energy consumption will be monitored both during Energy Awareness Week and the preceding seven days to check the impact the events have had on consumption."
