Six Town Housing and Bury Council have successfully bid for government funding to bring empty properties back into use around Bury.
Various estates across the borough have properties that are left empty and in some cases this can lead to houses falling into disrepair and becoming a problem for neighbours and the community. In addition, there is a high demand for affordable housing in Bury, whilst a number of privately owned properties are left empty. As a result of this, Six Town Housing has purchased properties in Prestwich and Radcliffe that fit certain criteria such as having been left empty for two or more years. Six Town Housing are now refurbishing these properties in order to let as “affordable homes” (80% rent of normal market value) and continue to look for further opportunities to purchase and refurbish empty homes.
All refurbishments will be made before the end of March 2013 and have been made possible after a successful bid for around £20,000 per property (£80 total) was made via AGMA (Association of Greater Manchester Authorities). As a result of a further successful bid to Green Go Early, a government scheme encouraging energy efficiency, Six Town Housing will ensure the homes have 'eco friendly' energy measures such as draft proof doors and double glazed windows.
Paul Webb, Manager of Sustainability and Investment at Six Town Housing said: "It seems such a waste when there is a high demand for affordable homes, whilst some properties are left empty and can sometimes become a bit of an eyesore. Securing the funding to carry out this project is a great step forward and will make a big difference to the estates affected. We are hoping to continue the good work over the next three years across Bury."
