Prosiect Gwyrdd will receive over £4.2 million of Welsh Government funding each year to divert non-recyclable waste from landfill over a 25 year period.
The Welsh Government has set the highest recycling targets in the UK and is working towards recycling 52% of Wales's waste this year, increasing to 70% recycling and zero waste to landfill by 2025. Prosiect Gwyrdd will help reach the Government’s zero waste to landfill ambitions by turning non-recyclable waste into enough energy to power around 50,000 homes each year, rather than sending it to landfill.

The facility, which is currently under construction at Trident Park in Cardiff, will create up to 360 jobs during construction and 36 full-time jobs when in operation, as well as offering apprenticeships and training opportunities. In addition to creating local jobs, the facility will also help to save councils money. As the cost of sending waste to landfill continues to rise, it is anticipated that Prosiect Gwyrdd will save the partner authorities approximately £500 million over the next 25 years.
The Minister for Natural Resources, Alun Davies, said: "At a time when councils across Wales are facing an unprecedentedly difficult financial climate and working to improve services with reduced resources, this facility will help councils in south east Wales save money, which can instead be spent on our schools, libraries and roads.
"Sending waste to landfill is literally throwing our money away."
