Council Proposes To Move Recycling Centre To Fengate

Peterborough City Council has announced proposals to move the city's Household Recycling Centre to Fengate when the lease of the current site in Dogsthorpe expires in 2014.

According to the council, the move to a purpose-built site in Fengate will offer a faster and more convenient service for residents, as well as provide the potential to offer a wider variety of materials that can be recycled.

The council also says that the proposed location, on the site of the former Ray Smith Group building in Fengate, will also benefit from being adjacent to the Energy From Waste Facility that is due to be completed in 2015, which will process the waste that cannot be recycled.

The council is inviting feedback on its proposals in a public consultation that will run to the 23 September. Comments will then be considered prior to the submission of formal planning applications.

A public exhibition is due to be held at the Caliente Club in Parnwell on Monday 16 September, where members of the project team will be available to answer questions.

Councillor Gavin Elsey said: "The Dogsthorpe site has served Peterborough extremely well over the years, as have the excellent teams that have run it on our behalf. However, some aspects of the site are far from ideal, for example having to climb up steps in order to put waste into the skips.

"The proposed site gives us an opportunity to make many improvements that will help make the process of visiting a household recycling centre an altogether better one. Many residents will be pleased, for example, that much of the centre will be under cover."
