A report on the construction of one of the largest and most technically challenging glulam structures in the world: By Nick Partridge of Wehmeyer UK Ltd.
For more than 10 years the Local Authority at Inzell in Germany had been pushing for a roof over the existing speed skating track to secure safe training conditions and to guarantee international competition conditions. Following an architectural competition a planning group consisting of Behnisch Architects from Munich and Pohl Architects from Jena was awarded the design contract for the speed skating stadium. In March 2010, following a public tendering process Grossmann-Bau GmbH from Rosenheim was awarded the contract for the construction of the new stadium on condition that it would be ready for use by the end of December 2010 and available to host the World Speed Skating Championships.
WHB-Wehmeyer, the parent company of Wehmeyer UK Ltd, was awarded the sub-contract for the on-site erection. Wehmeyer and Grossmann work together on many projects in Germany and in the UK. Both companies are around 100 years old and are highly respected throughout Europe for their reliability and technical expertise. They are renowned for the construction of many of Europe’s iconic award winning glulam buildings. For example: The Pavilion of Hope in Hannover, the Staffenbruecke in Austria and Kassell Regional Railway Station.
The construction of the stadium used 4200 m3 of glulam timber and 1300 tons of steel components.
