Eric Wright Begins Building Cumbrian College

Eric Wright Construction has broken ground on the site of the new Energy Coast UTC.

A ceremony was held at the centre to celebrate the work starting at the college.

Guests included Workington MP Sir Tony Cunningham, Alan Smith, Allerdale Council leader, the Eric Wright Construction team and some of the young people who have expressed an interest in attending the Britain's Energy Coast college.

The Energy Coast UTC is a new concept in education for 14 to 19-year-olds in West Cumbria, combining traditional academic classroom-based learning with practical skills. The curriculum will have a strong emphasis on Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM), sustainability, clean technologies and construction.

It is due to open next September with a first cohort of around 140 students, and up to 500 students studying there by 2018.

Potential students found out more about the college and spoke to the college's principal, Gary Jones.

John Wilson, managing director at Eric Wright Construction, said: "We are extremely proud to be starting work on Cumbria's first UTC which will change the face of education in the county.

"The facility will provide a modern and high-tech environment for technical and academic study, ensuring that the next generation of engineers and construction workers are equipped with the necessary skills and qualifications to succeed in the energy sector."
