Network Rail Applies 'Finishing Touches' To Station Project

Network Rail is applying the 'finishing touches' to an upgrade project at Nottingham Station.

Heritage terracotta comices will be replaced as the £60 million upgrade scheme is being completed.

The mouldings in the porte-cochere of the Grade II listed building will be made by a specialist Dutch firm.

The majority of station improvements were carried out over a two-year period before a grand reopening back in October 2014, with a huge investment seeing the creation of more shops, new platforms and a tram train bridge.

Work to the porte-cochere could be not completed before the official opening due to a lack of suppliers with the necessary skills.

Scaffolding will be erected soon to begin work later this month.

It is expected that the specialist operation which involves removing the existing mouldings, designing replacements and then hand crafting each new piece, will be completed in February 2017.

Steve Hughes, Area Director for Network Rail, said: "The terracotta cornices at the front of Nottingham station need replacing and we have found a highly skilled supplier who is able to make them to the standard we expect for this wonderful, historic building."
