Self-Employed Roofer Fined After Man Falls From House

Construction News Image
A self-employed roofer has been fined after a man fell from the roof of a house and suffered serious injuries.

Adam Menzies, 43, of Falkirk Road, Larbert, Falkirk, pleaded not guilty to health and safety offences.

After a trial, he was found guilty at Falkirk Sheriff Court. He was fined £8,000.

The court heard Brian Honeyman, 50, had been brought in by Mr Menzies to help with a roofing job in South View, Stenhousemuir in July 2012.

However, while carrying out the work, Mr Honeyman fell six metres and sustained head and spinal injuries.

As a result, he is likely to reside in a care facility for the rest of his life.

After an investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), the Crown Office for the Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) charged Mr Menzies with health and safety offences.

It said Mr Menzies failed to ensure the work was properly planned, appropriately supervised or carried out in a manner which was safe.

He also failed to arrange provision of scaffolding or other means to prevent a fall.

HSE principal inspector Isabelle Martin said: "Adam Menzies failed to provide a suitable scaffold that would have protected against this fall from height.

"This disregard for basic safety precautions has resulted in Brian Honeyman suffering horrific injuries from which he will never recover."
