Bournemouth University Reveals £100m Development Plans

Construction News Image
Plans to build £100 million worth of 'landmark' developments have been revealed by Bournemouth University (BU).

The proposals involve developing the new buildings at the University's Lansdowne and Talbot campuses.

A four-week public consultation discussing the plans is now underway and will come to an end on Friday, 19 February.

Plans at the Talbot site include a 'landmark' Poole Gateway Building for the Media and Communication, Management, and Science and Technology faculties.

In addition, transport and accessibility facilities will be built including a bus hub and a new link road off the Boundary roundabout.

A new £10.5m Student Centre was opened at the site in March 2015, while a £22m academic centre is due to open this spring.

At Lansdowne, plans include bringing the Health and Social Sciences (HSS) faculty under one roof with modern facilities in the Bournemouth Gateway Building along with associated parking.

As part of the project, Three Sixty Developments is proposing to build 550-bed £37m student accommodation on a separate site in Lansdowne Road.

In addition, a new International College opened at the site last summer.

Professor John Vinney, BU Vice-Chancellor, said: "Bournemouth University has recently been recognised in the top 200 most international universities in the world. Our proposed new developments are key to helping us achieve our vision of providing world class facilities for a world class university so that we can continue to develop global talent.

"The new buildings will bring investment in the region of £100m into Bournemouth and Poole, creating striking gateways to Talbot and Lansdowne.

Public exhibitions will be held showcasing the Talbot and Lansdowne schemes on Monday, 08 February and Wednesday, 10 February.

All feedback will be analysed before planning applications are submitted to the local authorities in March.

If approved, construction is scheduled to begin in 2017 for both sites with buildings opening in September 2019.
