Council Reaches Milestone On Extra Care Scheme In Leeds

Construction News Image
Leeds City Council has reached a milestone on its flagship extra care scheme, it has been announced.

Work on the steel frame of the Wharfedale View extra care project is now nearly complete, while the central lift shaft has already been installed.

In addition, contractor Henry Boot Construction is underway with stoneworks, while rooms are beginning to appear with internal walls on the ground and first floor half way to completion.

The scheme involves developing 45 apartments for elderly people as well as a hair salon and restaurant to be run by the council's Civic Enterprise Leeds.

It is part of the local authorities overall council house growth programme, which will see around 1,000 new homes built over the next three years.

Cllr Lisa Mulherin was on site earlier this week to help the construction team finalise the steel roof structure.

She said: "As the first council owned and managed extra care scheme in Leeds, it's hugely exciting to see the building coming together.

"Wharfedale View is a flagship development that will enable us to provide accommodation that lets older people live independently for longer, safe in the knowledge that support is on hand if they need it."

Tony Shaw, Henry Boot Construction operations director, added: "This is a significant project for Leeds City Council and the local community. Through collaboration with the design team we are pleased to be progressing Wharfedale View to the very highest quality standard."

The project is expected to be completed by autumn 2016.
