M5 Flood Alleviation Scheme To Finish Next Week - Highways England

Construction News Image
A flood alleviation scheme on the M5 near Bristol is due to be completed next week, Highways England has confirmed.

A three-mile section of the motorway at Falfield has been subject to flooding issues in recent years due to drainage deterioration.

A six-month works programme will now conclude with narrow lanes being removed on both northbound and southbound carriageways, signalling the completion of the project.

To facilitate the removal of the narrow lanes and resurfacing work, both southbound and northbound carriageways will face full overnight closures from 8pm to 6am in the coming week.

Dave Frampton, project manager for Highways England, said: "This section of the M5 near Falfield suffered from flooding to both the hard shoulder and lane one during periods of heavy rain.

"The pipework has now been upgraded, which will improve flood resilience and in turn the safety of road users on this stretch of our network."

The full southbound carriageway from junction 13 to junction 15 will be closed overnight on Saturday, 9 April; junction 16 to 13 northbound will be closed on Sunday, 10 April; junction 14 to 13 on Tuesday, 12 April and junction 16 to 14 on Wednesday, 13 April.

Diversions will be in place.
