Galliford Try is continuing work on a £7.5 million junction upgrade project in Jarrow, South Tyneside.
The Lindisfarne scheme, which involves widening both the Lindisfarne and John Reid Road roundabouts, is due to be completed in summer 2017.
Other features include widening the dual carriageway from two to three lanes in both directions and widening two local approach roads.
An early project milestone involved the completion of a 1,125m3 flood attenuation tank, which will help alleviate flooding on the Lindisfarne roundabout.
The development is part of a wider strategic transport investment programme which aims to reduce congestion and the number of accidents, reinforce the economic potential of the A19 corridor, and establish a strategic gateway into South Tyneside. Pedestrian and cycle routes will also be improved.
In addition, Galliford Try is a gold sponsor of the ICE North East's Inspire campaign which aims to stimulate the interest of students in careers in civil engineering. A key element of the campaign is a competition for schools to design a poster to promote the industry.
Gino Salvatore, Galliford Try public liaision officer, said: "We'll be inviting students to have a look around the Lindisfarne site, giving them some ideas for designs and then sitting on the judging panel with the presentations at the ICE North East's annual dinner."
