ISG Wins £21.7m Contract

Construction News Image
ISG has won a £21.7 million contract to redevelop an office building in London.

The contractor will modernise and extend the 1930's Walsingham House building close to Fenchurch Street Station.

Features include demolishing the interior structure of the building while retaining its Portland stone façade. New piled foundations will allow for a steel frame structure to be built, adding two additional floors to the existing eight-storey building and creating nearly 50% more internal office space (65,000 sq ft).

External works include cleaning and restoring the retained façade, as well as upgrading glazing with high performance units sympathetic to the original art deco window designs. Two additional floors will also feature curtain walling and contemporary Portland stone cladding.

Other plans will see the upper floors served by a single core featuring three lifts and two staircases, with a new substation installed at basement level. Overall, the development aims to achieve a BREEAM 'Excellent' rating.

As the area is located in a conservation area, enabling works and an archaeological investigation will be carried out to uncover and record remains, which are expected to include sections of a Roman road and structural elements from the 13th, 16th and 17th centuries.

Matt Blowers, managing director of ISG's UK Fit Out and UK Construction South business, said: "Managing complex interfaces and operating in logistically challenging and busy environments is where ISG really excels as a business and this latest scheme further strengthens our credentials as London's leading office contractor."
