New Report Sets Out Road Improvement Schemes For Coventry

Construction News Image
A new report has set out how a series of major improvement schemes could help strengthen Coventry's roads network.

The 'Connecting Coventry' report reveals how the local authority can work with different agencies and nearby local authorities to boost its road network, ensuring major routes are kept clear in the event of problems, as well as allowing the city to take advantage of its geographical position.

The schemes would be funded through the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA). Councillors will be asked to put forward four major programmes for funding, including; Coventry South, City Centre; Coventry North; and investing in the development of a new public transport system.

Subject to funding bids and other approvals, a number of improvements plans could be developed over the next 10 years. City centre schemes would include work at the railway station to create an extra platform, a new entrance and footbridge to double its capacity and improvements to the roads network around the station. Upgrades could also be delivered to junctions around the Ring Road.

Cllr David Welsh said: "A number of improvements have already been carried out to roads in the city thanks to European funding and now we need to make sure the city continues to benefit from improvements that actually lie outside our boundary.

"We are at the very heart of the country and our road and rail links are so vital because they make us even more attractive to investors, who bring more jobs and prosperity. But, our task is to make sure that the roads are up to the task with traffic free flowing – and which don't come to a standstill when there is an incident on one of the motorways."

In addition, the report highlights the south of the city is developing rapidly as a major site for research and employment, with both Jaguar Land Rover and the University of Warwick expanding.

Cllr Jim O'Boyle added: "The creation of the combined authority gives us a unique opportunity to work with neighbouring authorities and come up with a plan that strengthens the roads network for all of us and gives us better links than ever before.

"Coupled with the improvements to the city centre, the expansion of Jaguar Land Rover and our universities, this improvements package puts us in a really strong position to create new and exciting times for the city and better jobs and opportunities for those who live here."

If councillors agree to the scheme, bids will then be sent to the WMCA for approval.
