Arcadis Selected For £136m Camden Town Tube Station Upgrade

Construction News Image
Transport for London (TfL) has selected Arcadis to help deliver a £136 million upgrade scheme at Camden Town tube station.

The consultancy will deliver enhanced concept design, detailed design and construction support for the multi-million pound project, which is scheduled to begin construction in late 2019.

The Camden Town Station Capacity Upgrade forms part of a large investment programme to transform the Northern line, and will include work at platform level to provide more space for passengers to change between trains.

By 2031, it is forecasted demand will exceed station capacity by up to 7,000 people in the mornings and 12,000 in the evenings. To alleviate this, the works will include the creation of a second entrance and exit to the station – including access tunnels and a new entrance hall - as well as three new escalators and step-free access from the street to platform level.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan recently confirmed the project as one of his key priority projects for the capital and is part of a record level of investment into modernising London's transport's infrastructure.

Arcadis' appointment follows two other multi-disciplinary service wins with Transport for London, including Barking Riverside Extension and Old Oak Common, both of which are key London Overground projects to support regeneration and enable wider commercial development and housing.

Value enhancement of the concept design is now underway and the development is scheduled for completion by 2024. Sub consultants are OTB Engineering, CJ Associates and Mace.

Tim Hockney, Project Director at Arcadis, said: "Our appointment at Camden is part of a long standing relationship with Transport for London, and will see us building on the success of our earlier involvement delivering capacity upgrade work at Holborn station.

"These upgrade works are essential if the tube network is to support London's growing population, and Camden Town is one of the busiest stations on the network, long prone to overcrowding and access problems, particularly at weekends and weekday peak times.

"It is vital that we continue to invest in creating world-class facilities right across our public transport network, thereby enabling people to move around the city with ease."
