A joint venture (JV) between CH2M and VolkerStevin has started carrying out upgrades at Morecambe Wastewater Treatment Works (WwTW) in Lancashire.
C2V+ is undertaking improvements at the facility as part of United Utilities' (UU) £70 million upgrade programme in the Morecambe Bay catchment.
The upgrade work is required to comply with tighter regulation standards within Morecambe Bay set by the Environment Agency, which will be imposed from 2019.
Features include helping to increase flow capacity to cater for future growth and development, reducing the number of stormwater spills per bathing season from Schola Green and improving the quality of treated effluent from Morecambe WwTW using treatment process technology known as Nereda.
Other major works will take place at Schola Green Wastewater Pumping Station (WwPS) as well as a major upgrade at Morecambe WwTW near Middleton.
Overall, two new stormwater storage tanks will be built at Schola Green WwPS, while a new pumped pipeline will be installed between Schola Green and Morecambe (Middleton). The treatment process will be replaced and fully upgraded using Nereda technology, while the land-section of the existing outfall pipeline will be upsized from Morecambe (Middleton).
Completion on the scheme, which is being delivered through UU AMP6 CDP framework, is scheduled for 2020.
Richard Towse, board member for C2V+, said: "We are delighted to be awarded this vital project. Using our skilled teams, we will deliver these improvements in close consultation with the local community and will use innovative techniques to minimise inconvenience and deliver high quality wastewater treatment."
