Work On Kidderminster Public Realm Scheme Complete

Construction News Image
Work on a new public realm project in Kidderminster is now complete.

The scheme involved creating two new public squares as well as re-surfacing pedestrianised retail streets in the town centre.

Designed by IBI Group, the 'Exchange Place' square has been transformed from a vehicle dominated highway junction into a pedestrian priority public square. The design represents the form, colour and fan pattern detailing of the 'Penny Black' postage stamp, celebrating Roland Hill who founded the modern postal system and whose statue stands tall in the space.

In addition, new themed street furniture and public art features have been installed in the pedestrianised shopping streets to celebrate the town's rock music heritage, famous for artists such as Robert Plant and John Bonham from Led Zeppelin. Other highlights include the creation of a heritage trail through the town centre that includes a collection of crafted seats in the form of vinyl record stacks and bespoke benches in the shape of guitar necks.

IBI Group Landscape Architect and Studio Associate, Danny Marsh said: "We are proud to have transformed Kidderminster's public realm and shift the focus of the town centre back to its traditional heart with a focus on the pedestrian experience. We hope the Council's investment will become a catalyst for economic regeneration and a place in which both locals and visitors can enjoy for many years to come."
