Work Starts On £6m Goole Flood Alleviation Scheme

Construction News Image
Work has started on a £6 million flood alleviation scheme in Goole, East Yorkshire.

The project involves building an underground storage tank and new sewers near St Joseph's Primary School to increase the network's capacity. Works will be carried out on behalf of Yorkshire Water by Mott MacDonald Bentley, a joint venture between contractor JN Bentley and industry consultant Mott MacDonald.

The tank will hold excess waste water during heavy rainfall events and store it until the storm has passed. The water is then released back into the sewer network so it can be safely treated.

Overall, the scheme aims to reduce flood risk for 30 properties. Throughout the project, Yorkshire Water and Mott McDonald Bentley will engage with St Joseph's Primary School pupils to explain the water cycle and the dangers of construction sites.

Speaking after the ground-breaking ceremony, Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Brigg and Goole, Andrew Percy, said: "It was an honour to break ground on such an important investment in Goole. Flooding has had a devastating effect on people in the town and I've been campaigning for investment to reduce flood risk.

"I welcome Yorkshire Water's £6 million investment and will continue to update residents on other schemes that are currently being investigated to further reduce the risk of flooding for the town."
