Construction News Image
Plans have been submitted for the first phase of a regeneration project in Birmingham.

A total of 207 new homes are to be built on the 43-acre Icknield Port Loop site. The scheme is being delivered by regeneration specialists Urban Splash and Places for People with landowners Canal & River Trust and Birmingham City Council.

The joint venture (JV) partners will create 90 apartments, two new public parks, and canalside spaces during the first phase. They have been working with award winning masterplanners Macreanor Lavington, ShedKM and Glenn Howells Architects on the housing and with Grant Associates on the public realm designs.

Future plans include developing a new leisure, sports and swimming centre on Ladywood Middleway. A separate planning application has been submitted for the building. If approved, the facility should open by mid-2019.

The overall Icknield Port Loop 'masterplan' includes up to 1,150 new homes, commercial, retail and leisure facilities.

James Lazarus, Head of Property Development at Canal & River Trust said: "The proposals are really exciting and mark the first step in a major regeneration around the canal, which will ultimately open up access to a previously unseen part of our network. Birmingham is the centre of the 200-year-old network of canals."
