Work is continuing on a regeneration scheme in Manchester.
The West Gorton regeneration programme is being delivered in partnership between the City Council, Keepmoat Homes, Matrix Homes and the Guinness Partnership.
The project involves demolishing 440 outdated Council properties, including two tower blocks, and building 212 new homes for social rent. A further 144 retained homes will also be refurbished, while Keepmoat Homes are currently on site delivering up to 400 new homes. Other plans include public realm improvements and delivering a new community park.
Armitage Primary school has also been extended to provide additional school places, while the former Fujitsu Complex has been redeveloped into a purpose built facility for large scale television and film production.
As part the programme, a new community hub has been established on the corner of Hyde Road and Clowes Street, while a new medical centre will begin taking patients from this week.
The new surgery building, which includes the pharmacy and a training space, used a sustainable design to cut running costs for heating and lighting. It aims to become the country's first zero carbon doctor's surgery building. The project was funded and led by Assura PLC, designed by West Hart Partnership and delivered by LSP Developments.
Julie Jefferson, West Gorton Medical Centre Practice Manager, said: "This is such an important step for our practice - the whole of this area has been remodelled and regenerated and there's lots more housing to go up so we will have more patients coming through our doors – we need a modern space and facilities to look after them.
"Our old building used an awful lot of energy so we're hoping that the new design will help us control energy costs and help the environment at the same time."
