Construction News Image
Work on a £300 million upgrade project at Bond Street Tube station in London is now complete.

The station's capacity has been increased by 30% following the opening of the new entrance and ticket hall on the north side of Oxford Street at Marylebone Lane.

In addition, four new lifts have been installed to provide step free access, while preparatory work to build a step-free interchange to the Elizabeth line has also been completed ahead of services calling at Bond Street station in December 2018.

Other highlights include the installation of two new escalators, which will make it easier to exit the station which currently becomes congested at peak times, and two new interchange tunnels to further ease congestion.

Val Shawcross, Deputy Mayor for Transport, said: "The upgrade of the station is going to make a real difference for passengers and marks another key stage in the development of the area, with the Elizabeth line due to open next year and our plans for the transformation of Oxford Street progressing well."

Mark Wild, Managing Director of London Underground, said: "The new, modernised Bond Street station will make journeys quicker and easier for the hundreds of thousands of people who travel through it every day. It's fantastic to open the station in time for the Christmas shopping period, making Oxford Street more accessible to all of our customers as well as boosting businesses in the area."
