Dyer & Butler Wins Network Rail Footbridge Replacement Contracts

Construction News Image
Dyer & Butler has secured a number of contracts with Network Rail to replace footbridges in Sussex.

The deals are part of a wider, rolling programme of maintenance work Dyer & Butler's southern rail division is carrying out on behalf of Network Rail to ensure that its network remains safe and reliable.

The latest contracts are to replace a number of existing Exmouth precast reinforced concrete footbridges along the Sussex route, One of the first structures to be replaced was the Boswell footbridge near Caterham railway station, that was built during the 1950s and nearing life expiration.

Prior to the site works commencing, representatives from Dyer & Butler accompanied the Network Rail project team at a local 'drop in' session for members of the public to explain the scheme in more detail and answer questions.

The scope of works included the staged demolition and removal of the existing footbridge and the installation of a replacement, pre-manufactured steel footbridge that will provide improved access. Features included recoating the new staircases and main span in accordance with Network Rail's M20 protective system, as well as providing improved durability and returning it to a visually acceptable standard.

The bridge was also fitted with Perma-grip hazard warning tactile flooring, DDA Stairmaster nosings and Perma-grip PU anti-slip surfacing.

Dyer & Butler Senior Contracts Manager, Andrew Hodson, said: "Night possessions of the line were given to our project team for the demolition, as well as the installation work for the new steel bridge which was lifted into position by an all-terrain mobile crane.

"Due to the site's close proximity to local homes, the team worked carefully to avoid excessive noise and disturbance to local residents throughout the seven-week project which ran to programme."
