VolkerRail has been selected to carry out rail replacement works for Sheffield's Supertram network.
South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE) has chosen the firm to deliver the second phase of the project, with VolkerRail having delivered the first phase between 2013 – 2015.
The works will extend the network's life by replacing sections that have suffered wear and tear on the street running rails. Work is expected to start in April and be carried out between May and September for the next three years.
Overall, 11.5kms of tracks will be replaced, with work this year to be focused between Middlewood and Hillsborough.
SYPTE's Executive Director, Stephen Edwards, said: “The Sheffield Supertram is an important part of Sheffield's public transport network, with 12 million journeys made each year. It is a key asset, providing a sustainable, environmentally-friendly alternative to the car and helping to support economic growth alongside other transport programmes in the city."
John Pearson, General Manager of VolkerRail's Metro's and Rail projects division, said: “We are delighted to continue redeveloping Sheffield's Supertram network. This network is a key transportation link for commuters and we aim to ensure as little disruption as possible while we replace track along the routes."
