Bristol City Council has pledged to help protect the rights and conditions of construction workers by signing a Unite Construction Charter.

The Charter commits the local authority to working with the union to ensure the highest standards in respect of direct employment status, health & safety, standards of work, apprenticeship training and the implementation of appropriate nationally agreed terms and conditions of employment on projects under the council's control in Bristol.

Marvin Rees, Mayor of Bristol, and Karen Cole from Unite, will sign the Charter ahead of a Cabinet meeting at 4pm in City Hall later today, 03 July.

Welcoming the council's commitment towards the city's construction workers, Ms Cole said: "The Charter will help local workers to operate in a safe environment on construction sites and to ensure they can raise health and safety issues without fear.

"Unite has had a positive response from the leader of South Gloucestershire Council  to the Charter and we hope the council will be following Bristol City Council's lead shortly and sign up to Unite's Construction Charter."

Mayor Rees added: "As we are in the process of delivering on major housing and infrastructure projects it's great that we are moving forward with ethical construction practices and I am delighted to work with Unite to make construction sites in the city fairer and safer."
