A new award-winning building has opened at Monmouth Comprehensive school in Wales.
The £44m school incorporates a mixture of theatre style areas, a large hall and studio spaces to study informally, together with naturally lit classrooms and a range of leisure spaces for young people to enjoy.
It also boasts the latest digital technology, including cinema quality projectors and the latest interactive teaching equipment for teachers and students.
Contractor Interserve delivered the project alongside Monmouthshire County Council and BDP Architects. The team was also sourced locally, with around 70 per cent of the builders, electricians, plumbers and engineers on site living in the area.
The new facilities, including the dance studio and hall, will be utilised by the local community.
Matthew Graham, Senior Quantity Surveyor at Interserve, said: "Monmouth Comprehensive School is the final project for Interserve as part of the South Wales & Mid-Wales Collaborative Construction (SEWSCAP) Framework and sees the culmination of around ten years of collaborative working from the initial tendering process through to the construction and final handover of the new school.
"The new school and its design fully embraces the new emerging Welsh Curriculum whilst challenging the norm on how traditional education facilities have been delivered. One of the key challenges of a project of this size, has been the direct communication and collaboration required to ensure that we maintained a fully functioning operational school during construction and ensuring that no element of the construction programme affected exams or the general day to day running of the school.
"Monmouth Comprehensive School is more than just a construction project. It's become the heart and soul of the community and something all of the team including our supply chain, has been proud to be involved with."
The Monmouth scheme also recently claimed Project of the Year in the Education Building Wales Awards and the Digital Construction Award in the Construction Excellence in Wales Awards.
