The first phase of development at Merseyway Shopping Centre in Stockport is set to begin early next year.
Construction firm GRAHAM has agreed a deal to deliver the first phase, which will include £3.5 million worth of work to Adlington Walk, the covered area next to the main shopping centre. This will create a new customer arrival point including high-quality toilet facilities; a new stair and lift access; new public realm and accessible entrance from Chestergate; and complementary facilities.
The contractor will also offer placement and training opportunities – including apprenticeships and upskilling of the workforce working on Adlington Walk. The Council and local employment and skills support partners will help to target opportunities at local jobseekers.
Councillor David Meller, cabinet member for economy and regeneration at Stockport Council, said: "I'm really excited that the first phase of improvements to Merseyway will soon be underway.
"We've got big plans for the town centre and Merseyway is central to these. Along with Redrock, the revitalised market place and a constant stream of new restaurants, bars and shops choosing to set up business in Stockport, the town centre is on its way to becoming a modern, thriving centre that everyone can enjoy.
"We look forward to working with GRAHAM and seeing these fantastic new facilities being enjoyed by local people."
This contract is part of the Council's £1bn regeneration plan for the town.
Nick Williamson-Corbett, business development manager at GRAHAM, added: "Merseyway's redevelopment is a key part of the Council's wider regeneration plans for the town.
"GRAHAM has a strong track record of managing projects like this, which involve liaising with a wide range of stakeholders both at pre-construction and construction stages, and we're looking forward to working with Stockport on this exciting project. It's also a further win for us via the Procure North West framework, which is bringing forward a range of new opportunities across the region."
The redevelopment project is being designed by architects AEW.
