Key Bridge Installed In Hull

Construction News Image
Hull's marina is set to connect with the southern end of Princes Quay Dock courtesy of a new state-of-the-art bridge.

Contractor Interserve has successfully installed a new bridge across the A63, bringing key sites together across the city.

The bridge, which was manufactured off-site, weighs 150 tonnes and is 60 metres long, was wheeled into place last weekend. It will enable pedestrians and cyclists to cross over the busy dual carriageway while the removal of a pelican crossing will improve traffic flow on the busy A63.

This Highways England project is the first phase of the A63 Castle Street road improvement scheme.

Highways England Project Manager Tom Peckitt said: "It is fantastic to see the bridge in place and for members of the public to now see it in position. Our team worked exceptionally hard throughout the weekend to move the street furniture, prepare the route and position the bridge by wheeling it to its final destination. The team worked throughout the night after the installation to reopen the A63 15 hours ahead of schedule."

Wayne Howell, Interserve Divisional Director for Highways, added: "This project will deliver improved safety, better access to the marina area and reconnect the city centre with its waterfront and regenerated Fruit Market. Our work will also alleviate congestion on the A63 towards the Hull ferry terminal.

"Now the bridge is installed the team at Interserve Construction will now focus on the remaining work we need to do to complete the bridge which will include installing the ramps and stairs and completing the marina platform and landscaping. This has been a fantastic project for the team to work on and is a real showcase of their capabilities and innovation in delivering key infrastructure projects."

The new Hull bridge will open in spring 2020.
